Most SMEs are stuck with disconnected data, unclear insights, and lack a foundation to start building from. If your data is shallow, fragmented, or chaotic, AI will only amplify the noise.
This week’s conversations with a few SME business owners reinforced something I’m seeing more and more. AI isn’t the main problem – the issue is that most of them aren’t even close to ready for AI adoption. Not because they’re unwilling, but because:
- Their business lacks the the foundational tech / data stack that AI relies on – connected tools, clean data, and process clarity – just aren’t in place.
- They see AI as a tool – whereas it requires a total mind shift towards how they look at, understand, and leverage data.
Where most SMEs find themselves vs. what they’re missing out on
To make sense of these conversations – and provide actionable, practical AI advice – I’ve started grouping SMEs into distinct “AI adoption readiness” categories. Here are three common ones:
1. Fragmented Tools, Reactive Insight
- Baseline AI Readiness: These businesses have separate website or social media analytics and rely on ad-hoc customer conversations. No CRM, no automation, and AI looks like just another “tool” they’re being told to sign up for – often viewed with skepticism.
One step forward: Start by connecting your customer touch points – even a free CRM helps break silos and create clarity.
Ready to Build: These businesses track their website or DTC funnel, but the “why” behind the numbers remains unclear. AI is seen as a dashboard or “automation” layer, not a way to connect insights across marketing, sales, and operations.
One step forward: Map your customer journey and identify one place where connecting two data sources could drive a smarter decision (e.g., linking sales data with marketing campaigns).
Ready to Automate: This group has a working CRM and a few tools talking to each other, but real automation and smart data flows still feel out of reach. AI’s potential is understood – but buried under the question: “How do we actually make this work?”
One step forward: Pick one recurring manual task (e.g., customer follow-up emails) and automate it with tools you already have – AI-enabled or not.
Bottom Line
AI isn’t a plug-and-play solution – and it’s not a silver bullet. It needs to be adopted based on where you are as a business. Otherwise, it becomes just another layer of complexity, not clarity.
The opportunity isn’t just about using AI – it’s about building the right foundation so AI can work for you, not overwhelm you.
So – where do you sit today? And what’s your next step?
